2012: Year in Review
Dec, 2012 get together with some BUDS board members and volunteers
Wow! Thank you board members, volunteers, donors, partners, and especially the participants in the many Building Understanding (BUDS) events and programs of 2012. This year we impacted over 1,000 individuals, producing dozens of programs, and joining with tens of partners for local, national, and international projects. Our efforts attracted newspaper and television coverage, spreading our message of building understanding to broader audiences than ever before.
Importantly, Building Understanding was recognized by the IRS as an official 501c3, tax-deductible organization and with that designation we initiated our first, critical fundraising campaign. This campaign will allow us to ensure that no teen is turned away from joining this summer's Camp Everytown experience due to financial limitations.
Endless thanks to those who have contributed already; if you haven't done so yet, please do so.
Some the 2012 programmatic highlight were...
- January's Challenge Day with East Cobb Middle School
- February's Dinner & David family film viewing and discussion event
- April's Spirit Sounds interfaith concert at Emory University
- April's Minding Mandalas workshop in partnership with the Interfaith Sisters group
- August's 2nd annual Grillin' w/BUDS! event in partnership with the Clarkston Community Center's Farmers Market
- July's Tango & Transcendance workshop for the N. America Interfaith Network Conference
- October's Privilege Walk workshop for undergraduate students at Vanderbilt University
- November's Building Community workshop for teens & children at the Marietta YELLS after school program
- December's Raising Moral & Innovative Leaders workshop in partnership with YouthUniverse at the Global Peace Convention.
- And the monthly Building Understanding Speaker Series in partnership with the Northside Kiwanis Club
I am beyond excited about 2013, not least of all because the transformative Camp Everytown experience is set (July 21-26) to empower a new generation of high school juniors and seniors to be change agents in building more understanding communities.
It is with similar enthusiasm too to announce that Building Understanding has joined with the King Center, Points of Light, the Global Peace Foundation, the GA Commission on Service and Volunteerism, and others to launch the Be the Dream service projects initiative. Over the course of the year, we will be recruiting volunteers to help beautify and restore the historic The Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change.
Finally, the Building Understanding speaker series will continue on the third Friday of every month, noontime at the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. It is our privilege to welcome the GA Fulbright Alumni Association as a co-sponsor, joining our much appreciated ongoing partner of the Northside Kiwanis Club. We look forward to featuring panel discussions and presentations by current Fulbright grantees as well as alumni.
I do hope you'll join with us in building a more understanding, compassionate world.
Sincerely,
Daniel Shorr
