BUDS Name

Building UnDerStanding (BUDS) was thus named to spell out our core mission, and to paint a fuller picture of our goals through metaphor from the abbreviation 'buds'.
- Budding plants signify change and beauty entering the world. Program participants are BUDS themselves, girded by our programs in their commitment to building understanding, equality, and peace.
- An abbreviation for buddies, BUDS create friendships and personal connections that span cultures, religions, skin colors, sexual identities, and other common divides.
- Botanical BUDS are exciting, but unfinished. A journey of unfurling lies ahead to reach full bloom. The suggestion is that though our programs help participants begin the journey of creating a more just world, they have a lifetime of honorable work ahead of them.
- Coming in an array of colors, shapes, and sizes, but of the same core nature, BUDS symbolize the vast variety of lifestyles, cultures, personal histories that each of us claim.
BUDS Logo
Our logo was designed to convey the beauty of diverse people living together in unity - the shapes and colors are to capture the organic, floral aspect of the BUDS metaphor, and to simultaneously depict multiple differing hands supporting one another.
